Welcome to the City of Sin, where secrets hide in every shadow.
Enne Salta was raised as a proper young lady, and no lady would willingly visit New Reynes, the so-called City of Sin. But when her mother goes missing, Enne must leave her finishing school—and her reputation—behind to follow her mother’s trail to the city where no one survives unchanged.
Frightened and alone, her only lead is a name: Levi Glaisyer. Unfortunately, Levi is not the gentleman she expected—he’s a street lord and con man. Levi is also only one payment away from cleaning up a rapidly unraveling investment scam, so he doesn’t have time to investigate a woman leading a dangerous double life. Enne’s offer of compensation, however, could be the solution to all his problems.
Their search for clues leads them through glamorous casinos, cabarets and into the clutches of a ruthless society. As Enne unearths an impossible secret about her family, Levi’s enemies catch up to them, ensnaring him in a vicious execution game where the players always lose. To save him, Enne will need to surrender herself to the city…
And she’ll need to play the game.
‘Ace Of Shades’ is certainly a departure from the usual genres that I read. My usual genres are crime, thrillers, chick lit and sagas. However as the saying goes ‘a change is as good as a rest’ and so I looked forward to reading ‘Ace Of Shades’. Well it was certainly a interesting read, which I really enjoyed but more about that in a bit .
The two main characters in the book are Enne Salta and Levi Glaisyer. Enne is a young lady, who has been attending a finishing school. Enne is a sensitive soul. Enne’s mother goes missing and Enne resolves to find her mother but to do that means that Enne has to leave finishing school and investigate her mother’s disappearance. Enne’s mother has left a bit of a trail and by a bit, I mean she has only left one lead and that is Levi Glaisyer. Enne travels to New Reynes to find her mother and she receives one heck of a reality check when she lands. It is obvious that she is a visitor and I was worried that she was making herself more of a target and that people would take advantage of her. Enne does toughen up somewhat but then she has to, to survive. Enne and Levi work side by side and you couldn’t get two more different people. Levi is from the less respectable part of the city and he is not the man she expects to meet. Far from being a gentleman, which is what Enne was imagining of Levi, he is actually a conman and a street lord. The relationship between Enne and Levi was interesting. To start with I didn’t think that they would get on being poles apart but it wasn’t long until Enne and Levi began to get along quite well and work well as part of a team. Will Enne find her mother? Will Enne stay in Sin City? Well for the answers to those questions and more you are just going to have to read the book for yourselves to find out as I am not going to tell you.
It took me a little while to get into this book but that’s more about the fact that I am not used to reading science fiction & fantasy type books. However, once I got into reading this book by god did I get into it. I have a very vivid imagination and I just loved being able to imagine this whole new world in my head. The author’s writing style is such that I became hooked from the first word on the first page and she described this new world in such strong and vibrant terms that it seemed to come alive. I really became addicted to reading this book and the time and page numbers just flew past in a blur. The world as described in this book just sounded so much more interesting than the world in which I live. In fact I so wanted to jump into this world. This book is perfect escapism reading and an ideal book to pick up when you need a distraction. Reading this book was much like riding on a weird and wonderful rollercoaster ride, where you have to expect the unexpected. There were twists, there were turns, there were moments where my stomach was almost in my mouth and there were moments where I just wanted to put my hands over my eyes because I genuinely feared what was going to happen next and I feared for the safety of Enne and Levi.
‘Ace Of Shades’ is one of those books that I am so glad that I had the opportunity to read. It was a different genre and a different writing style but this is certainly one author whose books I will definitely be reading again. I would have no hesitation in recommending this author to other readers. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a well deserved 4* out of 5*.
